Your own reasons

One of the most common questions I encounter about calligraphy is, “How should I appreciate calligraphy?” and “How can I write well?” Many books attempt to address these technical concerns, often concluding that using the correct method and practicing diligently is key. While this is true, I believe there’s a different perspective to consider. My experience shows that calligraphy is not just a skill but a cultural medium where we can define its meaning.

From winning my first calligraphy competition as a child to supporting my livelihood by offering calligraphy cultural experiences, I’ve seen how this art can become a transformative force in people’s lives. I sincerely strive to uncover the value of calligraphy to help those in need, making it a vessel through which I can bring light to my life.

So, before answering “How to appreciate calligraphy?” and “How to write well?” I invite you to ask yourself:

“Why do I want to appreciate calligraphy? Why do I want to write well?”

In the past, my answers were, “I want to win awards, make my parents happy, and gain recognition for my talent.”

Now, I would say, “I want to face myself honestly, see my blind spots through practicing various scripts, and build a sense of accomplishment and confidence through improvement.” or “I want calligraphy to be a gift, a way to express love to those around me.”
