SHufa

  Foundation

When East Asian cultural wisdom meets modern healing practice.

Shufa Foundation transforms Chinese calligraphy into a universal practice.
It is where East Asian cultural wisdom meets modern healing practice.

We believe that a single brushstroke can reconnect you
with your breath, your body, and your inner clarity.

In a world that moves quickly,
we create spaces where you can slow down enough to hear yourself again.

Our work is rooted in three pillars:

Cultural
Aesthetics

We honour Classical Chinese calligraphy not just as an art form,
but as a way of seeing —
a philosophy of balance, rhythm, and presence.

 Mindfulness Practice

Each stroke is a somatic experience.
The brush teaches softness.
The ink teaches presence.
The paper teaches acceptance.
Together, they invite the nervous system into calm.

Community &
Learning

From intimate workshops in Vancouver to long-term journeys like the Shufa Club program, we support both beginners and committed practitioners in building a sustained writing practice.

I reconnect with myself through each stroke.

Founder Teresa Kung

Raised between Taiwan and Canada, Teresa Kung has practiced Chinese calligraphy for over 30 years and taught it internationally for more than 8 years. With degrees from UBC (B.A. in History) and NCTU (M.A. in Social Research and Cultural Studies), she bridges East and West through a warm, accessible approach to Shufa—rooted in both tradition and lived experience.

They say

Teresa is hugely knowledgeable and passionate about calligraphy and does a fantastic job of transferring that knowledge in a way that is interesting and fun. We enjoyed learning about the history of Mandarin characters and getting understand more about the materials we would be using, including grinding the ink. We were trying out calligraphy for the first time. We had plenty of time to practise the strokes and Theresa provided lots of. encouraging feedback. At the end of the morning we were proud of what we had achieved in a short time.

- Heather Clarke

What a great night! Having the opportunity to spend a few hours learning the basic brush strokes was wonderful! I was part of a small group of two, and we not only learned the history of calligraphy and how it has changed over time, but also had substantial time to practice before creating our own keepsake to bring home. The class is a great value for the price, and you walk away with not only a memento that is framed and laminated, but also a new talent. Teresa is absolutely fabulous!
